Better and better!

Forwarded, from Didier Briel on the OmegaT Yahoo list, https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/OmegaT/info:

OmegaT 3.5.3 is the new Latest version of OmegaT, with 23 enhancements and 6 bug fixes.

It is now possible to use machine translation on demand for the current segment. It is also possible to avoid calling machine translation engines for already translated segments.

Thanks to the developer of the LinkBuild plugin (https://github.com/hiohiohio/omegat-plugin-linkbuilder), URLs in the Comments, Notes and Glossary panes are now clickable.

Glossary matching was improved for terms containing numbers.

Instead of loading the dictionaries at the start of the program, they are now loaded on demand, thus reducing the memory footprint. Dictionary entries can now also use the tokenizers, similarly to the glossaries.

In the Search window, it is now possible to exclude orphan segments from the results.

It is now possible to have an alternative translation where the translation is the same but the note is different.

The Open XML filter now loads Visio 2013 files with the extension *.vsdx.

In the online help, external links will open in the user default browser.

Two new scripts are provided: Strip Bidi Marks (strip_bidi_marks.groovy) allows removing bidi marks in the current segment, and Non-breaking spaces replaces spaces with non-breaking spaces where appropriate in French.

Spell checking issues with some Turkish characters were fixed.

Tag validation could wrongly mention bad nesting for custom tags. Tag nesting is now only tested for OmegaT tags.

Due to a small change in the translation engine response, MyMemory machine and human translations were not working. This is now solved.

Fragment to be removed were not coloured correctly.

The Belarusian, Czech, Dutch, German, Interlingua, Japanese, Norwegian and Spanish localisations were updated, including the full documentation for Czech, Dutch, Interlingua and Japanese.

You can download the new version following the directions from
http://www.omegat.org/en/downloads.html
for latest versions.

Auto propagation Dec 3, 2015

Suggestion:
1) Automatic propagation button to automatically propagate from the start to the end of document in one sweep.
2) User-friendly segmentation interface.

Use OmegaT’s bug tracker at Sourceforge.net, your requests will draw more attention there.

1) Automatic propagation button to automatically propagate

There are no buttons in OmegaT. If you mean automatic propagation of matches from TM, it has been implemented, although in a bit different way. Refer to Chapter 13. Translation memories of the user manual.

User-friendly segmentation interface.

You should be more specific. I find OmegaT’s segmentation interface absolutely user-friendly.

OmegaT always automatically propagates exact matches if "autopropagation" is enabled in the project settings. Perhaps you means something else when you say "automatically propagate"? Could you describe what you mean by that?

Suggestion: User-friendly segmentation interface.

Yes, the segmentation settings interface is a nightmare (particularly since there is no "test" feature, i.e. you always have to re-navigate through all of the dialogs to test every little change that you make), but I think what adds to the difficulty is the fact that OmegaT's segmentation system is also quite confusing (i.e. how do the different types of rule sets interact with each other, and how exactly the priority system works), not to mention the fact that one needs to know quite a bit of regex to program new segmentations. A very useful addition would certainly be an extra dialog in which one can quickly specify a non-breaking abbreviation, without having to think carefully about which ruleset to put it in and how to write the regex that would successfully and safely accomplish it.

OmegaT follows SRX rules Dec 3, 2015

This is all defined in the SRX standard.

Propagate in WFC Dec 3, 2015

Dani, do you mean "propagate" as in English language of Wordfast Classic.

http://www.condak.cz/nove/2015-11/13/cs/01.html

pretranslate = translate a whole document / přeložit celý dokument

translate = translate a target field of opened segment / přeložit cílové pole otevřeného segmentu

propagate = translate a terminology (tokens) using a glossary/ přeložit terminologii (tokeny) pomocí glosáře

In Pandorra box have to be activated feature Propagate.
The document(s) can be in WFC pretranslated on tab Tools after pressing a button Translate.

That may be, but OmegaT users don't edit the XML segmentation rules files in a text editor. OmegaT users edit the segmentation rules via the OmegaT interface.

What is meant by "autopropagation" Dec 3, 2015

Dani, do you mean "propagate" as in English language of Wordfast Classic?

Well, in Trados, "autopropagate" means to automatically insert matches in all further segments that have a fuzzy match with the current segment, if the current segment is confirmed. In MemoQ, "autopropagate" means to automatically insert all further matches only if they are exact matches (not fuzzy matches). WFC can't have that kind of segment propagation because WFC segments on the fly, whereas Trados, MemoQ and OmegaT (and most other CAT tools) presegment the text. WFC does use the word "propagate" for automatic term insertion, but that is not the same kind of thing as Trados and MemoQ's "propagate".

OmegaT does not (AFAIK) have the ability to autopropagate fuzzy matches, but it does normally propagate exact matches automatically (unless that setting is disabled).

Yes, I was about to say that: different things are considered "user-friendly" by different people. For some, not having to use one's keyboard except for typing letters is "user-friendly", even if it means having to click through several dialogs to accomplish just one small thing. For others, being able to change settings quickly and effortlessly with minimal training is "user-friendly".

Yeah, it is good, but it is techie. Dec 3, 2015

Before migrating to Trados and, finally, Wordfast, I was using Omegat. It was good, but some people need a user-friendly segmentation UI. It is one of reasons for some Omegat users to migrate.

You just click a button, then automatic propagation runs from the start to the end of document.

Comparing Wordfast and Omegat is like comparing Windows and Ubuntu. Everybody know Ubuntu is good, but it is only good for techie, while Windows is good for common people.

That doesn't change how "the different types of rule sets interact with each other, and how exactly the priority system works".

If you say so, then I believe you. However, the fact that we known that what you see in OmegaT is just a graphical representation of what is written in the SRX file does not make it any less confusing (for non-developers) to get their heads around it.

All rule sets, as long as they apply to the language, are applied from top to bottom.
Inside a rule set, all rules are applied from top to bottom.
Once applied to a given part of text, a rule is not challenged by any rule below.

That's about it.

Didier
