A candle for deceased rather than late colleagues Jan 31, 2015

I agree with the underyling sentiment. As mentioned, an in-memoriam lit-candle tribute already exists.

I received a shock from the original title of the post. I thought it meant a black mark for colleagues who were late with translations or interpreting assignments! Perhaps late can be changed to (BrE) deceased or ones who have 'passed away'.

Saddened at the passing of Nicole Jan 31, 2015

I am surprised and saddened at the passing of Nicole.

What happened?

This is another example of why the kind of forum being proposed here is necessary....

Nobody will know when I have died. I will simply disappear from the Internet. And that suits me fine !

We MUST have better access to this news Jan 31, 2015

That's such sad news. Two of my ProZ.com role models in one year: first Catherine Guilliaumet and now Nicole Schnell. Both were incredibly competent, strong women, and both were ready to share their wealth of experience with others. Nicole was an inspiration to us all, particularly to beginners and the more naïve among us, with her hard-headed, entrepreneurial approach to the business.

I can't believe that four months have passed without me hearing of her death. We really must have a system for disseminating such important news more successfully.

Please, ProZ.com staff - make this a priority.

I was wondering where she'd got to. I thought she might have been banned because of her provocative comments!

RIP - sad news

In memoriam - dates missing Jan 31, 2015

I had a look at In memoriam boxes and I was surprised to see no dates, neither of birth nor of death. In some cases there is day and month but no year. I hope that this portal will stay strong for many more years and after a few years information like "recently" or month without year becomes meaningless.

"In Memoriam" boxes should go beyond just conveying that someone has died... Jan 31, 2015

Along these same lines, a short obituary would seem to be appropriate as part of the "In Memoriam" notice. This was done for Ernesto Lara, but I haven't seen it done for the other departed colleagues that I am aware of.

By the way, as of yesterday at least, Terry Burguess' profile page read as if he were still an active translator.

These things should be attended to more efficiently. Colleagues who knew the departed have their role to play in this regard, but this site should also have an effective means of converting the profiles in a reasonably timely manner and of facilitating communication of deaths.

Nicole Schnell - Witty writing Jan 31, 2015

When I heard here about Nicole's departure, I remembered one poll answer she wrote, back then, I contacted her to tell her how much I enjoyed it and that I laughed and laughed.

This was 2008

Question was:

This forum topic is for the discussion of the poll question "What computer type do you use for work?".

And after many answer dealing with the state-of-the-science equipment owned, Nicole wrote:
Cool! How much for the upgrade? Feb 27, 2008

Nicole quoted "lexical"

I was getting along just fine chiselling in cuneiform script on a pillar of granite till this poll came along and unsettled me. Where did I go wrong?

And she answered:

Does your licence allow you to carve on a back-up pillar? I recently upgraded from carving bark 1.2 (got a serious worm-problem, though, Scolytinae. Damn little hackers.) Then I switched to leather 2.1. Never got the tanning process right, so I refrained from sending translations written on hide. My clients might say that my translations stink.

I got curious and ordered Granite 3.1. This version comes with a 40% proof enhanced carver slave which guarantees beautiful italic fonts.

Wow, I thought the woman should be the editor of a satirical magazine or something, Charlie Hebdo would have hired her.

RIP witty colleague

In memoriam and Kudoz Jan 31, 2015

When I clicked Ernesto's and Nicole's links I accessed their respective "In memoriam" texts, but, what happened with their Kudoz contributions? Are they still available? Ernesto was prolific in the EN-SP pair.

Some may choose not to write on forums, but that doesn't mean that they are dead... Some people get forgetful and don't post for long periods of time. Some write a lot. Yaotl, your idea is good and noble. I have seen a black diagonal line on corner of the picture. Which would be easier? Also, would it be up to the relatives to notify Proz? I doubt that it would work. My relatives have zero idea of my life on Proz, or LinkedIn. ...............This writing on a tablet is not fun. Lu.

Black may not be the right colour Feb 1, 2015

Black signifies mourning in some cultures, in some white is the colour of mourning. Also, black has other negative meanings too, such as opprobrium. So we need to think of something more neutral and non-negative to indicate the passing away of a colleague. In Indian culture, a garlanded photograph indicates that the person is no more. I don't know whether this would work on an international site.

At the very least, the contact details should be made unavailable for deceased colleagues.
