Hi, everyone,

I believe I had heard somewhere that with Trados Studio 2014, there would be the possibility of adding terms directly from a translation memory into a termbase (i.e., I align files, creating a translation memory, and wish to add terminology directly from the memory into a termbase, without then having to create a project).

Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks!

Gabby

I'd like to know this, too Nov 30, 2014

I'd love to know this, too. Is there a way to do this WITHOUT copying and pasting and without creating a pre-translated file for the editor view?

There isn't a way... Nov 30, 2014

... to do this. But you can save the alignment as an sdlxliff in Studio 2014 and use that in the normal way.

Another interesting point would be to know if the TM contains only terms for your termbase or if you need to select them from complete sentences? If the former then perhaps you can export to TMX and then convert the TMX directly to a Termbase using the Glossary Converter from the OpenExchange with only a drag and drop.

Regards

Paul

How can I save a TM-file as a SDLXLIFF-file? I can't figure it out. (I have Studio 2014)

I need to select them from complete sentences. I would just like to build up my termbase in the TM view as I usually do it in the editor view. It's very convenient and it's a bummer that it doesn't work in the TM view.

If it's from alignment, as the original question I think, then all you do is align the files and then chose this:

If it's from an existing TM then just convert the TM to XLIFF. There are a number of apps for this but the best is possibly SDLTmConvert because if you have a large TM you can break this down into bitesized chunks more suitable for a Studio Project.

SDLTmReverseLangs for Studio 2014
SDLTmExport
SDLTmFindVars (free up to 50k TUs)
SDLXliff2Tmx
Microsoft Greek Terminology Collection

Hello Paul,

thank you for your explanation. It works when I save the alignment as sdlxliff. (I was working on my laptop when I wrote my question where I hadn't even installed service pack 1... (now I have SP 2).)

You're totally right. It's a shame that we have to buy a converter first. In other CAT tools you CAN add terms from a TM directly into a termbase (highlighting terms on both sides, than adding them with a mouse click, just as it is supposed to be).

SDL should definitely change this. I mean, it isn't the most inexpensive CAT tool out there, is it? I don't want to have to buy yet another app for 35 €.

Is it opssible that alignment takes considerably longer with SP 2? I'm trying to align a rather large document (500+ pages), it seems to take hours (I did the same with the same document on saturday with my pre-SP1 version, it only took an hour or less).

... use the batch export in Studio to create many smaller TMs, export to TMX and use the free TMX filetype. Or batch export to chunks smaller than 50,000 TUs and use the FREE SDLTmConvert.

It's a good idea to be able to do more with the TM Maintenance view, including QA etc. But the workarounds are not hard to convert to a Project for extracting terminology from your TM. If your TM is so large that you'll have huge numbers of files in your project then the time it takes to do a one off conversion will probably pale into insignificance compared to the time it'll take you to approve the terminology!

Paul
