How to search only some websites on Google (MAC)

Hi there,

I would like to search on Google only a handful of websites (some 10-15) and not the whole WWW. Is it possible? I thought there was an option in "advanced search" but I cannot find it.
Obviously I would like to be able to save this setting so I can use it again when needed (which is not all the time).

In case I need a different piece of software, I use a MAC.

the function you're looking for is called Google Custom Search:

http://www.google.com/cse/

For a single site, you would use the site: qualifier. For instance:

  • "Andrea Re" site:proz.com

    The quotation marks above ensure I'm looking for your name as a phrase, but are not required. They also ensure other Andreas and other Res won't come up in the results. Note there is no space after the colon.

    To restrict the search to KudoZ answers, extend the "site" specification (you identify this by looking at the URL of where you want to look):

    But we can extend if further:

    And if I want a particular entry, just add is as a search string:

  • "Andrea Re" "red tape" site:proz.com/kudoz/english_to_italian

    The two quoted strings above carry and implicit AND. If you want to search for either "red" OR "tape":

  • "Andrea Re" red OR tape site:proz.com/kudoz/english_to_italian

    And you can apply the OR operator to the sites as well. For instance:

  • "Andrea Re" site:proz.com/kudoz/english_to_italian OR site:andreare.it OR site:linkedin.com

    Another example. There are four Oil & Gas glossaries I use a lot. They are:

  • http://www.glossary.oilfield.slb.com/Display.cfm
  • http://www.centreforenergy.com/glossary.asp
  • http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/oilandgas/glossary_of_terms
  • http://www.qatargas.com.qa/Media.aspx

    To look for the term "acetic acid" in all of them at once:

  • "acetic acid" site:http://www.glossary.oilfield.slb.com/Display.cfm OR site:http://www.centreforenergy.com/glossary.asp OR site:http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/oilandgas/glossary_of_terms OR site:http://www.qatargas.com.qa/Media.aspx

    Hi there,

    thanks to Johan and Daniel for the suggestions.

    GCS seems to work fine, but it won't load on the iGoogle homepage (despite what they say...).

    Daniel, you are right that things are not really explained on Google. It is very mucg a matter of trial and error:)

    ...I HATE GCS.
    I accidentally closed the window where I had it set up and not I am totally unable to reopen it. I have tried all the inks under the sun, but nothing. I can only start from scratch again (and try to bookmark it)

    If you used the complex search at any point, it will appear in your History list.
