Hi everyone.
I just wanted to check if I am the only one with the following problem: machine translation (which can sometimes be quite useful) hasn't been working properly since last week. I'm only getting the translations in some segments, others remain untranslated. I always use Google translation, and this has happened in all the language pairs I work with.
Does anyone know what's happening?

Google has announced that the (free) Google Translate API will stopped in December, and that usage might be restricted before that.

I think Google has simply started to restrict usage, as announced.

Only last week? Quite honestly, machine translation has never worked properly! If it had, we would not be here working as translators, would we?

I mean with OmegaT!
The main reason I use it it's because in my job I have to translate lots of short basic texts (mainly descriptions like "X es Y y tiene Z") It really helps me save time and sometimes I don't even need to retouch the translation provided, it's Enter, then Enter, then Enter

We'll probably include the paying API:

and perhaps Microsoft Translator. For both, you'll have to register, but Microsoft Translator (for "low" volumes anyway) is free.

We'll have to wait and see what model Google will want everyone to follow.
In the mean time, why not extract your source text, have it translated by GTT's web site system, then align it with your extracted text, and create a TM that you drop into the /tm/ folder?

and independently from the way one looks at it, it is a nice lock-in... but not for translators.
I am by the way astonished at the many threads dealing with this matter. Seems that MT has bitten deeper than I thought...

I had heard something about this, but does this include Omega T too?

I just refer to Google's terms of service, which apply to all users of any Google services:
11. Content license from you

Clearly by sending anything to them, you are giving them plenty of rights upon materials that were entrusted to you by your customers. This should be read carefully by any translator before using Google Translate from any CAT tool (i.e. from the Google Translate API) or by itself.
Also, an increasing number of my customers prohibit the use of Google Translate and similar online MT tools in their work, for this exact reason.

In case there is an ambiguity:
What is sure is that the *source* segments (and only them) you translate via Google Translate are sent to Google. (The target segments are *never* sent to Google.) After that, Google can do whatever they want with them and they might or might not store them.
In this respect, I suppose OmegaT is not different from other CAT software using Google Translate. The only (obvious) difference is that you do not have to trust OmegaT on this, since everybody can check the source code.

Yep, that's what I've been doing over the last couple of weeks since GT hasn't been working properly any more. The whole process only takes a few minutes and it's a nice workaround if GT is of any use to you.
And yes, we all know MT cannot replace us and is by no means perfect, but it can still be very useful - at least for my language combination. I use it mainly for terminological reasons. Why manually google terminology if GT will automatically find the most likely translation within a fraction of second. You might still need to verify what GT finds, but it certainly speeds things up for me and my experience is that GT is - in most cases - dead on
