Tabulator insertion after bold fonts on MS Word 2003? Thread poster: Anna Villegas
|
I have a dictionary-type list: Source in bold; target in italics... But they're not separated by tabulators, but just with a simple space. The question is: How do I insert a tabulator (or any other symbol) after bold fonts on all the list at the same time? That is, in order to convert text into a two column table... Any help will be highly appreciated.
Use "Find & Replace" command | Aug 16, 2011 |
1. First replace all spaces in the source list with some symbol, so that the spaces between two- or three-word expressions in the source list do not turn into tabs. 1) Hit Ctrl+H, 2) check the "Use Wildcards" field, 3) insert "(?) (?)" in the "Find what" field (without the quotes) 4) hit Ctrl+b while the cursor is still in the Find what field and 5) in the "Replace with" field insert "\1+++\2" (without the quotes). Press "Replace all". This will turn all the spaces between the words in the source list into "+++", which you will than turn back into spaces. 2. Do the same with the target list, i.e., repeat the same steps, only in step 4) press the "No Formatting" button and then hit Ctrl+i instead of Ctrl+b. 3. Now hit Ctrl+H again, clear everything in all the fields, uncheck the "Use Wildcards" field, press the "No Formatting" button and then put the cursor in the "Find what" field and insert a space; then put the cursor in the "Replace with" field and insert "^t" (without the quotes). Press "Replace all" 4. Finally hit Ctrl+H again, put the cursor in the "Find what" field and insert "+++" (without the quotes); then put the cursor in the "Replace with" field and insert a space. Press "Replace all". I hope this helps.

But, do you think I can do what you say on a long list like this one?
It should work on any list. But first check that there are no double spaces between words. If there are, you'd better first remove them.

Find what: " " (without the quotes) Format: Not Bold, Not Italic (that is Regular) Replace with: ^t

Both methods are very useful. However, Selcuk's method is easier and faster. Thanks again!
You're welcome | Aug 18, 2011 |
Selcuk's method is definitely easier and faster. The only thing is that you have to be sure that the space between the bold and italic parts does not have bold or italic formatting, which is mostly the case because it follows a bold text. In that case it won't work. For this reason I suggested a longer way of doing it.
How about this one? | Aug 19, 2011 |
Find: bold text (using nothing in the Find field) Replace: ^&^t That will add a tab at the end of the bold text. Then cleanup the extra spaces, changing "space tab" and "tab space" into a tab: Find: space ^t Replace: ^t Find: ^t space Replace: ^t
