Problem with searches: translated segment does not appear Thread poster: Rosa Plana Castillón

Hello all,
While I was translating a document today, the Search function stopped working (it didn't find anything neither it showed the "No results" message – nothing). I updated to the latest OmegaT version available, as I hadn't updated for a long time. Now I do get results in my searches, but only the source segment.
Any idea of what's going on? Thank you in advance!

Look in the search box, under the line that says "exact search," "keyword search," etc. You have to check all the boxes for where you want the computer to search.

Hello Susan,
Many thanks for your answer, but I have checked "In source", "In translations", and "All results" (not sure of the English translation, my OmegaT is in Spanish), but no translations appear.
I have also tried checking and un-checking options here and there in the Search box, just in case, but I'm not getting the translations either. How weird...

I think my problem is solved: I tried unchecking the "Search on files" at the bottom left and bingo, here I have the translated segments.

I was baffled this afternoon by searching for something that didn't exist. I think it was "des SCID," which is a hybrid of the German source text (des SKID) and the English (the SCID). Double check that you've spelled the word correctly (best is to copy/paste it from the edit screen).

As the name implies, Search files allows searching in files, instead of searching in translation memories.
From the given search path, it searches all files in source formats (i.e., .docx, .odt, instead of glossaries and TMXs) known by OmegaT.

If I check the box, as you say, I don't get the TMX files. Maybe she wants those too!
I've never had the search function find things in the glossary (your post suggests that it should be able to). That would be terrific. Am I doing something wrong?

You get translation files from /source, not translation files from any location you want. The idea of Search files is to search for other files in your system.

You cannot have both at the same time.
But you can have two (or more) search windows opened at the same time with different parameters.

I didn't suggest it (glossary is not a "source" format).
But you can use the search function to find things in the glossary (assuming the glossary is in a text format, i.e., not TBX).
- Click on Search files.
- Point the search location to your glossary folder.
- It will work, as long as the extension of the glossary matches the extension for text files.
- If the encoding isn't the right one (by default, .txt in source is system encoding, while .txt in glossary is UTF-8), this can be configured in Options > File Filters > Text files.

[ ] in source [=in the source language folder] [ ] in translations [=in the translated folder, i.e., the target language] [ ] display all results [never knew why that was there; why would someone not want to display all the results?]

Fantastic.
I actually had no idea why there was a "Location: select folder" box at the bottom. All sorts of strange folders find their way there (i.e., I guess they're left over from prior jobs), but it seems to have no bearing on my ability to search WITHIN my job, which is what I have always been doing up to now. To me it has been "just one of those mysteries..." I guess that "Location: select folder" is only relevant when you've checked "Search files." Is that right?
I've learned a lot today. Either I need to back and RRTFM [reread...], or the FM needs to be changed to make all this clear.

Not exactly in the translated folder, in the target segment of the documents in the source folder, and in the target segments of TMs in the /tm folder, if Search TMs is checked.

Because, when it is not checked, duplicates are removed, which can be very useful.
It was the default behaviour previously.
But, sometimes, seeing duplicates is useful, to see them in context, which is why this option exists.

You might want to check the manual on this. If you find it lacking, then it means it could be improved.

Just for the record: the users' manual does not say anything about the bottom line of the "search" box, notably the "Search files" and "Location: select folder" fields. The discussion of these other matters is quite limited. I guess one of these days the manual will have to get even longer!
