I'm definitely an email-aholic! Does anyone know if there's a cure?

In memoriam
Hello Jun 17, 2011

My name is Dave, and I'm a netaholic.

I started surfing heavily about 12 years ago. At first, I thought I could keep it under control. I didn't need to go on line first thing in the morning: I'd have a lie-in, have a shower, make a coffee, have a cigarette and then check my e-mail. Being on line improved my social life, and brought me closer to my family. It didn't even get in the way of my drinking.

In recent years, however, I've realised that the situation has become more serious. The first thing that goes through my mind when I wake up is, "I wonder if I have messages?". I get out of bed as soon as I'm awake and switch on the laptop and PC, and make a coffee while they boot up. I'm already checking my e-mail accounts and facebook by the time I light my first cigarette.

I hardly watch television anymore because I find it distracts me from the PC monitor. I listen to on-line radio stations instead.

I don't go out drinking much these days, because being away from the internet means I miss too many important Facebook status updates. If a friend Skypes me or MSNs me to arrange a drink, I always update my Facebook status to tell everyone where I'm going, and with whom. And then I update my status when I get home to make sure everyone knows that I'm back.

I sometimes set my MSN status to "Off line" so that my friends won't realise how much I surf. Half of my friends are people I have never met in person. I don't even know what all of them look like.

I haven't spoken to my sister for 6 years. We e-mail occasionally. I have another sister, but she's not on line so we don't communicate at all. My brother doesn't answer e-mails and he's not on Facebook, but two of his friends are on Facebook so they pass me messages.

I ended up changing career and moving 2000km because of the internet. I told my sister that I was emigrating via e-mail, and sent a Facebook message to one of my brother's friends and asked her to let him know.

My name is Dave, and I'm a netaholic.

probably not Jun 17, 2011

Well, I thought I might be a netoholic but after reading it I think it's not so bad However, I may be an email-oholic.
You should do something about it and certainly have face-to-face contact with your family and friends. There is nothing that can substitute for it.
