Agencies often get in touch with me for the first time because they were looking for someone with expertise in the areas which I specialise in.

A couple of times a direct client checked both the CV and the KudoZ's. The WWA is also very important.

Still, one option is missing: "All of the above".

I seem to get quite a few searches in my language pairs, but specifying the country I live in (and a couple of jobs as a result of those searches).

I also think the blue WWA star has a positive psychological effect on prospective clients.

With Ian May 14, 2011

If I were looking for a translator, I would want to know if they were competent in the fields that I needed. Rates and WWA would come after than initial narrowing of the field.

OTOH, I've never looked for a translator, and I've had plenty of clients contact me about translations that are not only outside of my field, but in fields that I have explicitly stated that I do not not have competence (for example: technical patents, yes; medical patents, no).

CV May 14, 2011

As an outsourcer too, I always first check the CV (for personal information and experience). If I have candidates with similar qualifications, then I check their Kudoz, samples and ProZ activity.

If I have to get a country-specific person, esp. for localization purposes, then I check that as well.

WWA May 14, 2011

If I needed a translator, I'd look his/her WWA because it's a good parameter about references on his/her work.

Key Words May 14, 2011

I got my dream jobs through simple and precise key words in my profile - emphasized by my CV afterwards, of course.

CV (just asked my clients) with experience May 15, 2011

Several friends of mine don't have any profile sites on Web except ProZ. But they always have enviable jobs. Also my clients say they don't refer to Directory in selecting translators. They all replied 'CV'.
