Hello pradeep6170,

I'm sure colleagues working in your language pairs will be able to suggest a few ideas on how to get started as an English to Swedish translator in India.

However, I just thought you could also use watching the following short video on getting started in translation as well:

If you are in India you probably have a lower cost of living, and if somehow your language skills in Swedish and English are perfect ,you can offer translations at a much lower rate, compared to your "colleagues" living in either Sweden or Great-Brittain.

If you don't understand a particular word, or phrase you can simply ask a question here on the site under KudoZ, and any helpfull native translator will be glad to assist you...

Maybe you want to update your profile a bit showing your experience, but then you're starting off a great carrier in Translation. And if you want to do really well, you simply start outsourcing all the work you get to people in Europe and ask them to work for 0,04 euro/ source word (or lower)... that way you can make sure you get quality translations at a really reasonable price....

Go for it!

Could be worthy, but is it worth it? Apr 14, 2011

That of course depends on your level of ability in your source and target languages. How well do you know Swedish and Swedish culture? How many years have you spent in Sweden?

I'm sure you're aware that you should generally only translate into your native language. From your posting, I get a feeling that English might not be your first language. Are you, for example, able to understand the sarcasm in Edward's posting?

Based on your posting, I'm more likely to outsource

Based on your posting, I'm more likely to outsource a SV-EN job to my Swedish teenage niece for the following reasons:

a. She fully understands Swedish as well as Swedish cultural concepts
b. Her English, as well as that of many Swedes, is at a higher level than what you give evidence of in your posting

As long as you follow up by translating into your native language rather than English.

Despite the errors in his posts, he may actually have grown up speaking English as well as Hindi or another language. Many people in India are in fact English natives.

Many people who grew up in England are English native speakers. However, only the competent linguists among them have the right to charge for translations.

everybody can translate Apr 18, 2011

however, the quality is an issue here...

Staying/living a few years in Sweden and self proclaimed proficiency in a number of languages does not make you a proper translator. But who reads those manuals anyway?
Who will you be marketing your services to? Ikea, Volvo and Vattenfall? (I.e. Swedish companies looking for English translations - why would they trust you to deliver a good job if neither language is your native language? Find the answer to this question - and you're

If you are going to work for Indian companies, who would need SWE-> EN translations?

If you are going to work for other Indian translation agencies, there will probably be a big market for working on Swedish Public Tenders, which Indian (IT) companies want to answer....
In which case you can expect a lot of work around 0,02 eur/usd source word.

If you have to ask here and have no clue about what the market in India looks like, you're probably not going to be very successful
