It turns out that if I'm really deep in a translation, I don't even hear her. Which she has learned to use to her advantage, apparently using my silence as tacit permission. I don't know if I'm proud of her creativity or irked by it.

She has learned that if I say I need to finish a sentence/segment/paragraph, that I will get back to her and we can talk about whatever she needs.

My family is not a problem... Mar 14, 2011

My father worked at all sorts of odd hours, so he trained us, and we have a lot of students at the moment, so interruptions are short and relevant... at least to someone!

But how do you train clients?
Either things are too quiet, (it happens now and then...) or they all ring and mail at once with urgent jobs.

I've turned down a fortnight's work this morning already! All for delivery ASAP and the day after tomorrow is too late... And I have barely started on the big file I was going to have translated by the end of the afternoon in time for some fresh air and exercise!

Not necessary Mar 14, 2011

I have no children and the Mr. has a regular office job, so I have the place to myself all day.

Keeping the cat from jumping on my desk and trying to play with the mouse (no pun intended), however, is a different story...

Yes Mar 14, 2011

My family and friends usually understand that when working I don't have time for them.

Other Mar 14, 2011

Even when my daugeter was small, she would not interrupt me, plus my office is in a separate room. I have never had any need to set any limits.

I have a 3 year old, Mar 14, 2011

so it is not really possible to work when he is around, because he always wants something. Therefore, I either work when he is in preschool, or asleep. If he is home and I have an urgent translation, I leave him with my husband and go to a coffee shop or take him to a friend's house/or babysitter's.

Bring on the music! Mar 14, 2011

My family and some friends don't respect my time but at least they respect the little space I have in the living room, a pathetich one meter table with a computer which is holy, the space around it is sacred and not to be touched by anyone. Not even my husband is allowed near my computer or my table. He (the husband) touched it once and my computer crashed. So no strange hands around...
Time is another issue, but it's getting better since kids are growing (now 7, 11 and 13). So my guess is

Time is another issue, but it's getting better since kids are growing (now 7, 11 and 13). So my guess is that in a few years I won't have the problem anymore.
Otherwise I put on my headphones with some relaxing music and I quietly ignore them.

Although it's sometimes annoying, there's nothing better than being sought out by one of my own kids... just wanting to see me and be around. I eventually have to tell them to go away, but that's just part of life.

I live alone and have no kids. If I'm busy working I just don't answer the phone, or I tell anyone in my family that I'm working and not to call unless it's serious!

But I have dogs, neighbors, and a housemate. Most are pretty well trained, but the dogs will nag me if I mess up their schedule.
