Profile hits by Microsoft Thread poster: Argyro Alykatora

In the past two weeks, I have noticed increased hits on my profile in proz.com by a Microsoft IP in Redmond, Washington as well as New York. I searched in the Internet and found some similar complaints and concluded that Microsoft is running stress tests on our profiles. Is anyone experiencing the same problem and can we do about it? I can see about 15 hits per day and it seems that it is increasing!

so there are few new ways which could lead the crawler to your profile.
When I compare this information with the fact how often Google visits Proz, I am beginning to think that it may have something to do with building machine translation. If it is one of their priorities monitoring the biggest translation portal makes a lot of sense. And monitoring our profiles makes a lot of sense if you think that they can take so many perfect samples of translation just from portfolios.

Yes, you have a point. I hadn`t thought of that.
That is a good possibility.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am not really sure but what if I could restrict their IP in some way? Is that possible? I am really annoyed by this, especially if I think that they are trying to steal our work. Any ideas?

when all they do is crawl to your profile and see that you have uploaded sample translations free for all in the public domain to see. They probably/most likely do the same with all multilingual websites, not only translators websites but that of large multinationals. Comes with the territory I think. I am not familiar with the way Proz looks upon this but it should be relatively easy (or so I'm told) to insert a line of code in the Proz source that tells these crawlers to ignore the profile pages and move on. Perhaps site staff can comment on this issue or point us in the right direction? Also, perhaps it is a good idea to add the "yes or no" option allowing/disallowing search bots and crawlers to visit our profiles?
If you don't want your sample translations seen by bots who seem to collect them for the purpose of TM building for their MT, you should perhaps consider to not show sample translations in profiles, on websites, in fora, you name it.
Since Bing Translate and Google Translate seem to be in an all-out fight for dominance (or at least try to lure users with continuous "improvements") in the free of charge MT market, there is probably no way of avoiding this (at least, not with my limited IT knowledge).

I mean, the same Google crawls all of Proz.com very frequently indeed, Microsoft could be doing the same with Bing. To me, 15 hits is pretty normal if this was the situation.

As Tomás mentioned, this is probably Bing. You want Bing, Google, and any other search engines to look at your profile as frequently as possible. Your profile is there to be found and read or what is the point of having it? Your profile is not "your work," but the face that you present to the public. If you are concerned about your sample, I would recommend removing it.

As a matter of fact, I have visits which come up after someone apparently tries to find translations of terms through search engines.
Why not, after all? To some point, it is free advertising.
However, what I'd like ProZ.com to do is to find a way to filter out the visits of these Bing (?) crawlers, quite in the same way they did it for Google.

The issue has been checked by our systems administrator and he confirms that the Microsoft IP you are referring to is 207.46.195.242, which according to http://whois.domaintools.com/207.46.195.242 resolves to msnbot-207-46-195-242.search.msn.com and is MSNBot, the Bing crawler.

I second Laurent's suggestion. I get several hits fromMicrosoft every day with IPs starting with 207.46. Doesn't do me a bit of good to know they dropped by.
.....Oh my goodness! And now today already FIVE hits from IPs starting with 207.200.116.....Netscape????
These hits just clutter up and inflate my visitors list.

As Suzan already pointed out, it does not indeed help at all to see that they visited my profile. Can Proz.com give you the option to filter them out?

Any chance that these visits will be listed as crawlers' visits not normal visitors?
