Hello
I've been looking around on the net and these forums for a way to translate a pdf document . Its source is in latex so it would be an option to translate the source too. However, there seems to be no tool around. So how do you deal with such projects?

Internally, LaTeX isn't structured and standardized the way HTML or XML are, as it focuses on print output and has many plugins which complicate file conversion. Therefore my guess would be that in most cases, you'll have to edit the LaTeX file in a text editor. Everything else, such as converting LaTeX file to RTF or whatever, is just too error prone in most cases. As to PDF, there might be a CAT solution for that, but to me it seems unlikely.
So really your best option is to translate from your printed PDF the old-fashioned way, using a word processor (as long as you don't want to outsource to someone else, of course). If you get LaTeX files on a regular basis, you may want to learn how it actually works, given that a Word or OpenOffice file, for instance, can't be converted back to LaTeX just like that, such that you arrive at the original layout; someone would have to re-enter the translated text manually (at least in part).

Well, luckily I do know LaTeX (I once wrote my own master thesis in it since it was on a deeply linguistic subject). But I have no clue as to how I'm going to translate it in a decent manner (i.e. with a translation memory).
Oh well, the old-fashioned way it is then.

OmegaT has a LaTeX filter.
While it's not perfect (LaTeX is rather hard to parse), it is quite usable.

... for lecturing you about LaTeX, sandervdm; I didn't know that you have some previous experience with it. It wasn't my intention to preach to the choir here.
Some day I will have to test how OmegaT deals with it, but I doubt any CAT tool out there can cope with LaTeX for anything that goes beyond the most basic layout.

I translate LaTeX as a plaint text file and take care not to spoil the tags. Not ideal, but I have not been able to think up anything better.
It is a pitty LaTeX is not XML based, of course. There is freeware for making XML from LaTeX, but AFAIK there is no relaible tool for going back (it may be just a matter of proper parsing procedure, though?), so it is no good for this purpose yet.

Thanks all, that's been helpful. They do not necessarily need to have it back in LaTeX (which was only used to do some decent typesetting for the master thesis I'm translating). It is now being published as a book, so it might not be necessary to go back to LaTeX.
And never mind the lecturing opolt, I reckon one doesn't come across many translators with LaTeX experience, however little.
