As a mum of two lovely and very absorbing kids I usually go to bed very early, because at 8 or 9 PM I don't understand even Polish , but I get up early, sometimes even as early as 1.00 AM (3 or 4 AM most often). When I sit at the computer and still can't understand a word that means I just got up much too early.

When I l browse a dictionary more than three times in ten minutes - that works for me, it means my concentration and my memory are not that good anymore and that it's time to stop.

My day starts at 7:30 too, but I spend the first hour and a half trying to get my daughter to finish her breakfast and get to school on time. We very rarely make it, so I'm lucky if I manage to start at 9:30 after walking the dog, feeding the cats and putting the washing machine on (and the most important chore of all, a second pot of tea).
I have to stop working again at 3:00 to do the school run again. Most of the afternoon before my daughter's bedtime is spent running around getting her to her various clases or taking her to the playground and trying to spend some time with her, so I hardly manage to do anything except keep up with emails.
By the time you are finishing your day, Chris, I have barely done half the hours you put in. This forces me to start serious work again at around 9:00 or even 10:00 in the evening (my husband sometimes wants to talk to me too before he disappears off to bed) and I finish at 1:00 or even 2:00 in the morning. I know it is not ideal, and I am longing to go back to the days when I started work at 6:00 am, but I can't see that happening until my daughter starts secondary school (or eats her breakfast and gets dressed without constant nagging).
I finish at night when I get through the target work load. If I don't, then I'll start getting behind and will just have to put in even more hours the next day. However, if I can no longer make head nor tail of the sentence, I have to stop regardless.

I have to get up at 4.30 to bring my son to the swimming pool (training): unfortunately that means a 30 minutes drive to the pool and another 30 minutes back. I am able to work while being somewhat sleepy, but driving a car is something completely different. So, my working hours are from 6 a.m. to 3.30 (got to drive again to pick him up) and sometimes from 19 to 21.
The problem is: I am a 'nightperson', I'm at my best during the hours at which I am forced to sleep now...

Sometimes, when I have a special or difficult job my husband drives him (although he has to get up at 3.30 (milking cows)) and I can enjoy my favourite working hours....
Another reason why I love to work during the night: deadlines! In the evening it seems I have an indefinite amount of time to finish the job. When I start in the morning there is only so much time left...

Staying up until it's done means I can meet the deadline without any problems. I personally hate afternoon deadlines as it can be diffiult to manage time effectively to meet them.

When I lose the flow.
Most of my clients are legal eagles with sentences that can run into a paragraph. I'm usually able to follow and parse, but when I lose the flow and can't find fault with the original, I know I'm tired and have to wait another day. A fresh perspective works wonders.
Otherwise, I'm with Nikki and Chris. I also like working late (and I don't kick in early), so I assume the responsibility for that part.

...that I've been half-asleep and trying to translate the same sentence for the last half hour. I call it "brain fog". Once it sets in, there's nothing to do but stop.
By that time, my body has been aching for several hours, my vision is blurred, my eyes are stinging, and my dog has fallen out of my lap several times.

I prefer to work at night and find that I can work from 8pm til midnight before sleep hits and I start to actually nod off in front of the pc. I get up, make myself a coffee and have a 5 minute break and then revise the previous half hour's work which is usually gibberish, before getting back to work. I usually find that the three hours following are super-productive and often I can't get to sleep when I eventually go to bed, for thinking about alternative phrases etc. Maybe it's the brand of co...
