I was happily translating on Linux with Crossover Office, Word 2000 and Wordfast Classic, when most of my clients started sending work in docx format. I decided to bite the bullet today and "upgrade" to Office 2007 and new licenses for Crossover and Wordfast. I haven't gotten past the macro security issue. (By the way, I tried Wordfast Pro too, but it decided to quit working after a few tries. Plus, it is really not easy to use like Classic).

Nothing seems to work. I can't seem to post screenshots here. I followed all the security settings to the letter. I tried the "Linux" version and the regular version of WF Classic.
Word gives me a warning that "The macros have been enabled. The digital signature is not valid so the macro will be disabled". So then I enabled all macros and it tells me after trying to load in the template that the "macros have been disabled."
I get some other weird error but I haven't been able to reproduce it.
Very frustrating experience. I hate docx.
Prozian forum members have been helpful in the past with my Linux questions. Can anyone help this time? ▲ Collapse

from your description it's not very clear to me what is really happening there. But honestly this doesn't sound like it's a Linux issue at all, more like MS Word and Wordfast fighting it out among them on the macro level. Maybe you should ask in the WF support forum, not sure.

Anyway, you seem to have installed a whole new stack of software in one go, unfortunately that always implies some trouble because one tends to overlook config options and the like in the process. Try to reduce complexity and test each layer, maybe even install Windows stand-alone on an extra partition. If you have ongoing projects to deal with, you might be able do that with OpenOffice and OmegaT or something similar, and sort out the WF issues later on. ▲ Collapse

Microsoft Office 2007 is clearly marked with ‘bronze’ on Crossover site, meaning, it will ‘mostly’ work. MSO 2000 has ‘gold’, meaning, it is fully supported (this, however, does not apply to various add-ons etc, but WFC, as you know, works as well).
Well, try the water before you go!
I hate docx.
Then don’t work with them, why would you?
Can anyone help this time?

a) and c) sound good to me as a temporary solution.
Anyway, if MSO 2007 is not marked as fully compatible with Crossover, you definitely don't want to use that combo on an everyday basis; it also might explain the macro issues. You might want to consider installing a virtual machine -- personally I prefer a dual boot setup though.
@esperantisto: MSO formats are not always fully compatible version-to-version, never have been, that's why one would want to avoid converting those docs all the time, in the case of complex formatting anyway. docx was supposed to bring compatibility, but here we go again... If the client insists on the translator using them, not much can be done I'm afraid.
@Elliot: Have you tried opening/converting those docx files with OpenOffcie?

There are various different things that could be happening here, but the bit about a "digital signature" seems key to me. First, let's make sure that you have your security settings in order. Please go to the Wordfast Knowledge Base article at http://www.wordfast.net/?kb=92-16 for specific instructions on security settings in Word 2007. Try installing again according to the KB article and see if it works. If it doesn't work, make sure you are not trying to install an older version of WFC because older versions beyond a certain time period did not have a digital signature, so you will always get this error. If this is the case, please download the latest version and try installing it. If this is not the case, the very latest version of WFC is sometimes posted too quickly (during heavy development periods) and is temporarily without a digital signature. Try downloading the latest version again and installing. If none of this works, my last thought is that perhaps the Startup folder for Word 2007 under Crossover is in a different location than the default. If this is the case, add the location to the Trusted Locations list in the Word 2007 Trust Center.

FYI I use WFP on Ubuntu 10.04 and it runs very well. You might want to make sure that you have all your Java components installed in your distro if you had any crashing issues. Also, it never hurts to download the WFP installation file again and then completely uninstall and reinstall in case something got corrupted the last time you tried.

If you decide that Office 2007 is not for you, you should download and install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en ), which allows you to "open, edit, and save files using the file formats in newer versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint" with Office 2000, XP, or 2003.
