How to disable the touch pad

I have problems with erratic cursor on my new laptop (for full story see http://www.proz.com/forum/general_technical_issues/173899-the_curse_of_the_flicking_cursor.html). I have problems with erratic cursor on my new laptop (for full story see http://www.proz.com/forum/general_technical_issues/173899-the_curse_of_the_flicking_cursor.html). I have now decided to test the touch pad by using an external mouse. The only problem - I have no idea how to disable the touch pad. Under Windows 7 it does not seem to be so easy.

I am using Alps Pointing Device, Windows 7 (64bit), Sony Vaio VPCE series.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's how you can disable the touch pad Jun 24, 2010

Dear Colleague,
Well, I use the Alps Pointing Device, but my OS is Windows XP.
In my case, I right click the Touch pad icon near the clock in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then click "Mouse Properties." When a dialog box appears, I click the "USB Mouse connection" tab. Then I have three options to choose:
1. Touch pad to remain active alongside the external mouse,
2. Touch pad to become automatically disabled when the external mouse in connected, and

You may try to find if such options are available in Windows 7.

Windows 7 unfortunately does not have this option, that is why I was posting the question. A simple thing really, but they have thrown it out of this OS.

Hold Fn button and press F7.
Fn is located in low right corner of the keyboard.

Convenient option for the Linux users out there Jun 24, 2010

Just to let you know:

If you're using GNOME 2.28 or above (e.g. Ubuntu 9.10 or above), one of the options in the mouse config panel is to disable the touchpad when typing. Yes, you heard that right: as soon as you start typing, it gets disabled, and automagically resumes when you stop. Very useful to keep it from interfering and still keep it running. I've tested this, and it works like a charm.

I have the screen linked to F7, none of my keys have the touchpad symbol on them. F7 works only on certain makes of laptops.

Problem solved Jun 25, 2010

It turned out that I had to use Vaio Control Centre and there was an option to disable the pointing device. Quite simple really but not so obvious.
