Hello, I am translating some training material from english into french. The author has quoted some books as recommended reading. Do I have to translate the titles of these books? Thanks | | | Jan Willem van Dormolen (X) Netherlands Local time: 22:25 English to Dutch + ...
If there is a translation of the book, use the title of that translation (this will take some research). If there is no translation (or if you can't find one after a realistic amount of research effort), copy the original title and add a translation between brackets. Or ask your client what s/he prefers.

[Bijgewerkt op 2010-04-14 09:01 GMT] If there is no title translation, I never write a title translation myself. (I put the ISBN reference number under brackets). I do this, because it is possible that the book will be translated after your translation with a different title...

I would ask the client whether they need to be translated at all. If the books are in a foreign language, they won't be much use to people reading your translation. | | | Carol Gullidge United Kingdom Local time: 21:25 Member (2006) French to English + ...
As these are titles for "recommended reading", then you must leave the original titles - otherwise, how will the reader be able to find them? And, as Pablo rightly points out, beware of providing your own translation, as any future official translation will leave you feeling a little silly! If you nevertheless do decide to provide one, then do it in such a way that it looks unofficial - perhaps using square brackets? | | | Babelworth Congo, Democratic Republic Local time: 21:25 English to French TOPIC STARTER
