Today, I received this proposal from an agency in China. I have no idea why they mistook me from someone with whom they could work directly. Based on these prices, I wonder what rates they must be paying to their translators and proofreaders; and the fact that there are colleagues willing to accept them makes me cringe. I was tempted to reply with a counteroffer .

Perhaps it is because your web site markets you as "XYZ Translations" and not as "Mrs So-and-so".

Perhaps it is because of the letters "CT" behind your name, which may be mistaken for some foreign country's business extension (much like Ltd, Inc, BV, GMBH, etc). I have seen "CT" behind the names of a number of ProZians, and it has only just dawned on me that these letters may mean "certified translator" and not something like "Ltd" or "Inc" in the country of the translator.

Yes, Samuel, they probably only look at page titles. As for CT, it is the abbreviation approved by ATA, the only certifying body in the United States. Again, reading the page would lead them in the right direction, just as you did. Thanks for the tip.

For Chinese standards... Mar 16, 2010

thats' not even bad at all...

http://www.worldsalaries.org/china.shtml
100 USD = 682 (new) yuan (?)

so translating 3150 words at 0,08 already gives you the salary of an engineer or computer programmer...(let's sy 4000 because of inflation).

with 9500 you make the same an an airline pilot...!

As per your title, Luisa... Mar 21, 2010

there are colleagues here and there (and I mean people in their fifties) who think about translation as they would think of window cleaning.

They find no big differences between a translation made at a rock-bottom rate and a translation made at a reasonable price. After all, they argue, quality (as cleanliness) is only a subjective matter...
