From my own experience in the UK Feb 5, 2010

Hi Ashely,

From my own experience it can vary depending on the size of the firm, their location and what positions they offer fresh graduates. I can only speak for the situation in the UK and at technical translation agencies, but to start out at as a Junior Translator at an average-sized agency, I found approx. £15,000 p.a. to be the going rate.

Other, larger agencies may offer slightly more, but you start out as a proofreader at first before working your way up. Agencies based in London should be offering more to reflect their location, normally around the £17,000 - £18,000 mark from what I've seen. I also found technical agency positions to be the most common, but that was just my feeling at the time, I could be wrong.

Although £15,000 appears quite low when compared to graduate training schemes in large companies, if you do your homework and find a position at a good agency that will train you and give you the opportunity to progress, this figure can very quickly be revised upwards.

I was in exactly the same position as you in 2008 and in the end I found a Junior Translator position at a technical translation agency in the UK. I havn't looked back since!

Best of luck

Anthony
