How do I skip over a segment in WordFast? Thread poster: Edward Potter

I know it is a basic question but suppose I want to leave a line without translating it? What keys do I have to hit to skip over it?

I'm not quite sure why you want to leave a line untranslated - is it because you want to come back to it later, or because it is to remain untranslated in the final version (or is already in your target language)?
If the latter, I would simply use the "Copy source" arrow (probably second from the left on your Wordfast toolbar) so that the sentence will be the same in both the source and the target document.

(at least in WF Classic) you can highlight the relevant text in 25% Grey and activate the relevant function in: Setup>Segments>Use Highlight Gray 25% as untranslatable attribute
then WF will simply skip it / ignore it

I believe he would say to have the segment translated, but not saved to the memory during the translation process, isn't it?

Hi Amorel.
Thank you for your input. To answer your question, I have bits of text that are already in the target language. I am trying to avoid "translating" them by copying them into the target field. Upon cleanup it would make my TM bloated and inaccurate, though in the end, it probably isn't that big of a deal.
For now I am hitting End Translation, putting the cursor on the text I want to translate, then hitting Alt-Down Arrow.

If you want to simply copy the source text into the target box, then use Alt+Insert or Alt+S.
You can also use the WF toolbar, it is the second button along, the curved arrow.
Either of these will automatically copy the source segment you are working on into the target box.
Edit: on re-reading your second post I see that this wouldn't solve your problem of the size of the tM. So this probably doesn't help after all!

You can end translation as many times as you wish, and even translate in the wrong order (beginning in the middle of the text, etc). It is one of the reasons why WF Classic is so flexible.

Copying untranslatable text into your target segments will only pollute your TM. Mark these particular text segments as untranslatable beforehand and WF just skips them. I always use the marching red ants. Easy as pie.

Marjolein, I suggested 25% Gray because Marching Red Ants are not available in Word 2007.
But the rest is the same in case of the ants.

Thank you very much for your help. Your posting had not gone up when I was writing my last response.
Your solution seems to be one that works. However, is there some other way that I can simply skip over a segment as I am translating? The method you suggest requires going through the entire text beforehand rather than dealing with the text I want to skip as I go along.

I use the older version of Wordfast.
When you finishing translating a segment, simply move the cursor to the new segment you want to translate (skipping however much text you want to) and press shift+alt+down arrow. The new box will open there and you can continue working.
Sometimes a small window will open before WF opens the new box after the skipped text. I can't remember exactly what it says, but just click o... See more I use the older version of Wordfast.

1. Magdalena's solution, which involves going through and prepping your document to flag portions that WF will recognize as untranslatable.

There is a third option, but I'm not sure that it doesn't add something to your TM. That is to activate the Pandora's Box "AllowEmptyTarget" option by removing the underscore in the name, and then just don't translate those segments. You could test it to see what happens. If it adds a TU to your TM, you can either revert to one of the other two solutions or use this one and afterwards sort your TM for TUs with blank targets and then delete them all.

(AFAIK the full version of PRO is available to Classic licencees at no extra charge).
Then, just "copy source" with Alt-Ins and click on the next segment instead of "Alt-downarrowing" to the next segment. The first time you do this you'll be asked if you want to go on without committing the segment to memory.
