SDLX Lite - Is it compatible with Mac? Thread poster: Marga Dorao

Hello all! My PC just died, and I have been thinking about switching to Mac for a while. I don't normally use CAT tools, but some of my clients send me files on .itd, so I use SDLX Lite occassionally. My question is: do you know if SDLX Lite is Mac compatible?

I do not know, but today you can use near all applications with near all operating systems by mean of virtualization. However, some CAT tools vendors have protection schemes against virtualization and I am afraid SDL Trados would be one of them.
You can just try with Virtualbox from Sun Microsystems as it run under Windows, Mac, Linux and OpenSolaris and see if it works.

All new Macs have Intel processors and include Apple's BootCamp, a utility that lets you partition your hard drive (split it into two logical disks), so you end up with two independent hard disk icons on your desktop. To exchange files with this setup, you just open the Windows disk and locate the corresponding folders.
If you want to run both operating systems at once, which will forego the inconvenience of having to restart the computer, you can install a virtualization package, such as Parallels, Fusion, Wine, Virtualbox, etc. These work by splitting the system into separate virtual machines. Your screen will then be able to display any Windows application in its own window, just as if it were an OS X program, i.e., side by side with any other window. It's initially disconcerting: http://aplawrence.com/Reviews/parallels.png . However, since both operating systems are running at once, you can exchange information much more conveniently.
I regularly use SDLX and currently just use BootCamp:
• I did install the Parallels demo, and SDLX worked fine. Then the trial period expired and I found that by simple planning ahead and copying in advance the files I would need when using SDLX allowed me to work for long stretches. The inconvenience: I did not define any mail accounts in Windows, so while I use SDLX I have no email.
• I tried using SDLX with Wine (a free "compatibility box"), but it generates an obscure error upon trying to open a translation memory ("A problem has arisen with the COM technology currently being used (S42TM+)"), for which I found no solution.
• I tried Virtualbox. I cannot remember exactly why I uninstalled it—being free and all—, probably because of compatibility problems. This was a few months ago, so perhaps it now works.

As soon as I tested it, I recalled why I had uninstalled it: I could not make Shared Folders work, so I was stuck with a closed system with no access to my OS X files. The whole Windows setup in VirtualBox resides in some large f... As soon as I tested it, I recalled why I had uninstalled it: I could not make Shared Folders work, so I was stuck with a closed system with no access to my OS X files. The whole Windows setup in VirtualBox resides in some large files within the OS X hard drive, so there is no way one can create folder shortcuts to get around this limitation. The manual did not help either, as it's terribly geeky (http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/3.1.2/UserManual.pdf and also included with the above download).
A bit of persistence yielded success—it turned out I had to run something called VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe, an application included with VirtualBox that was visible from within Windows.
I then copied the SDLX installer and all my SDLX files from the BootCamp partition into my Shared Folder, and from there to the My Documents folders in VirtualBox. SDLX installed immediately and behaves perfectly!
By the way, VirtualBox is also a side-by-side application like Parallels, meaning that Windows opens in its own OS X window, as in the sample picture from my previous post, and you can immediately switch from one system to the other.

Hi, Marga: Perhaps you should read this thread too, as it has quite more information of wich tools may be used with Mac operating systems.

I have VirtualBox with shared folders, and it was very easy to do. First, you need to set up VirtualBox Guest Additions. Then, add your shared folders under the virtual machine's settings *before* you start Windows (I suggest giving them read/write privileges). Finally, start up Windows and use Explorer to map your shared folder as a networked drive.
I store all my SDLX files on the OS X side so I don't have to start up VirtualBox every time I need to email a file.
I am currently using VirtualBox version 3.1.4 r57640.

Dear Marga,
I am pleased to let you know that Wordfast Pro 2.3 for Mac has been release (last week). Wordfast Pro 2.3 can translate segmented TTX files.
Whenever you are asked to translate .idt files, just ask your client to "Export" them as segmented (pre-translated) TTX files. In this way, you can translate the TTX files in Wordfast Pro and use "Save Translated File" (File menu) to get the translated TTX files to send back to your client.

Just my two pennies. I love my Mac to bits and would not touch Windows if I had a choice.
However.
My husband, a Mac-wiz for over 15 years, installed a Boot Camp for me, and it *really* slowed things down. It works but it's super slow. I have a 2-year old MacBook with all the latest updates, installs, bells and whistles.
I don't know why it happens, may be it's not powerful enough, not sure. But after a while, with a sigh, I plugge... See more Dear Marga,

Sorry to bring this thread back, but I am having some problems to install SDLX lite in Parallels.
I have a Mac, which I love certainly, but as everyone, I guess, I have to run Windows. My first choice was VMWare, but it really slowed things down, so I am trying the latest Parallels, and it seems more friendly.

Just to say - obviously if you're going to be running Boot Camp, Parallels, Virtual Box etc. you need your Mac to be the fastest, most powerful processor available for that model, and the maximum amount of RAM that can be fitted.
