Isn't that HN1N1?

AH1N1 seems to be the correct term though:

Probably was only a case of stress related fever + headache, but I've noticed that my nose is getting distinctively flatter...

In Spanish too! Sep 16, 2009

A classic example, Lucía! Good link. In Spanish they've actually gone one step further by providing stickers shaped like accents to put on bad signs ("The Lost Accents Campaign") - maybe this could be done in English (but I don't recommend it as a way to attract customers!!!):

A great idea::

Still waiting Nov 24, 2009

Nearly 3 months on and I'm still waiting for a reply from Alboraya's OMIC (Consumer Information Office)...and the offending notices are still up for all to see and tourists to chuckle at.

No surprise at all Gary... Nov 24, 2009

One of my many old ideas of citizen cooperation is a website in which people could record the date when they submit to Spanish public authorities, with indication of the time it takes to get a reply --if ever--, with comparisons and statistics by kind of government (local, regional, national, courts, police forces), etc.

The idea is that citizens have a tool to better grasp how slow, inefficient, and plain arrogant the public administration can be in so many points of this country.

I know this does not sound very much like a patriotic statement, but I hope the reader understands: I love my country too much to see how our authorities waste our money to produce shameful results.

Please keep us posted Gary!

Another good idea, Tomás. Nov 26, 2009

Now there's an idea. A blog to log times people have wasted in queues over the appointed time. It could be done according to government department (health, tax, education, etc.). I've often wondered how many man-hours per year the economy loses in pointless queues and futile form-filling. I calculate myself at least a week's work per year is lost by me doing jobs which I presume the civil servants are supposed to be paid to do themselves-out of my pocket! Likely the same everywhere Nov 26, 2009

I've waited 4 years for a birth certificate for one of my children.

When was the Budapest Conference? My husband applied for a passport weeks ahead of it to come with me. Guess what? Nov 26, 2009 still no reply. Needless to say we missed it

This reminds me of an article I read in a women's maagazine in England in 1989, that stated that the average Englishwoman will waste 11 years of her life waiting - queue

This reminds me of an article I read in a women's maagazine in England in 1989, that stated that the average Englishwoman will waste 11 years of her life waiting - queueing up at the post office, grocery store, the Misery Line (that I could relate to!), doc appointments etc.

Is it money, or holding important papers and things hostage, that makes the world go round??

"Approach your card to the machine" Nov 26, 2009

Seen by me yesterday in the English instructions for a transit card validation machine on a transport authority bus in Zagreb, Croatia:

"Approach your card to the machine" [HR: prislonite karticu na aparat/place your card against (or up to) the reader]

Couldn't a major city could have afforded a decent translation? Argh!

Maybe they thought they were getting one--if you don't speak the target language, you have to trust someone else to do a good job for you. I think there are probably a lot of abominable texts in translation around the world that were paid for in the expectation of a professional, error-free result.

ETA: Rudolf, maybe this is an opportunity for you...
