Quoting for abridgement/rewriting

Hi,

I've been in touch with an outsourcer (agency) about the possibility of reducing a book in length for foreign readers while retaining the spirit and style of the original. It isn't a translation, the job is to turn an exisiting book into a kind of "reader" for language learners. I'm really not sure how to quote for this job as it's editing rather than translation and as I'd be reducing the text I don't know how a per word rate would work, but having never done this type of job b... I'm really not sure how to quote for this job as it's editing rather than translation and as I'd be reducing the text I don't know how a per word rate would work, but having never done this type of job before I'm not sure how much to charge as an hourly rate either. For proofreading I charge an hourly rate but this isn't proofreading really so I don't know if I should charge more.
I'm really lost. Any suggestions would be helpful.

It does not really matter what you do, an hours work is an hours work, right?

If you charge an x amount for proofreading by the hour, your time is worth x,
why should it change it you do something else?

The next thing is to see how many hours you need, if you can do proofreading at say 1000 words an hour, editing will probably take "a little" longer (up to 2x perhaps, depending on the complexity of the book)

Have you tried getting in contact with the people who do Readers Digest condensed books, to get some tips from them?

Copywriters charge more Oct 23, 2009

Keep in mind that copywriters charge more, usually around € 60/hr. You don't need to be too shy.
