I'm not sure, but when I ask a Kudoz question and haven't chosen an answer, Proz reminds me to do so after some days or weeks. If I still don't close and grade my question, Proz does it automatically based on peer agreements.
However, I was checking Kudoz questions that I have answered and there are many open, dating from March this year. These were perfectly valid questions, with agreements (or disagreements), where several people gave an answer, in the correct language pair, etc. ... - How long does it take for Proz to close these questions or will they remain open for good?

Hi Cristina,

As far as I know, the asker has an option to decline all answers (which reads in the reminder: "none of these answers were appropriate, please do not remind me to choose one"). In that case, no answer is selected automatically.

In my experience, the community never shows up to grade and the KudoZ entry rapidly fades into oblivion.

You're right, Daniel. It's a pity that one spends time looking for an answer, writing down suggestions, and then at the end we never know what happened with it...

But aren't there questions which are changed to community-graded questions after a few days after you posted your answer to a question? Most of the time, you don't know which questions are community-graded beforehand. You said you no longer answer to community-graded questions, but do you retract (hide) them once you realize that they were changed to community-graded questions?

The answer is in the same point just 2 lines lower:
If two answers have the same number of net agrees, the last one entered is selected. The idea is that if two answers gather the same number of net agrees, the one that did so in a shorter period of time may be better.

This thread was started last year but the scenario is pretty much the same. Many questions have been open for months but what I notice lately is that the same askers come back time and time again to ask more questions. I was wondering if perhaps ProZ could remind these askers on the main submission page to close their open questions first before posting new ones? If technically possible at all, this could be based on either the length of time they've left their previous questions unattended and/... Hello,
Let me quote two FAQs to answer this thread:
Is there a limit on the number of questions that I can ask? Yes. Your daily limit (measured over a sliding 24-hr period) depends on your membership level. If you are not registered with ProZ.com, you can ask one (1) question per day. If you are registered but not member, you can ask five (5). If you are member, you can ask fifteen (15). There are also weekly limits of 20 questions for registered non-members and 60 questions for members. If you have ten (10) questions that have received valid answers and have been open for more than a week, you will not be allowed to ask further questions. Please grade and close these questions to continue asking.
What happens if a "help" question isn't graded? If a "help" question has received answers but not been closed within three days, an email is sent to the asker reminding him or her to grade. If the question remains open after four such reminders have been sent (over 2 weeks), an attempt is made to select the best answer automatically. An 'autograding robot' makes its selection based on the net number of peer 'agrees' received by each answer, according to the following rules: - To be considered, an answer must have at least two "net agrees" (agrees-disagrees). - The answer with the highest number of net agrees is selected. If two answers have the same number of net agrees, the last one entered is selected. The idea is that if two answers gather the same number of net agrees, the one that did so in a shorter period of time may be better. In other words, all those agreed to the second answer have seen the first one and still voted for the second, therefore preferring the second answer, while those that voted for the first one may not have seen the second answer when voted. If no answer has at least 2 net agrees, it remains open.
There is a system to prevent people from having too many questions with valid answers open, and a system to automatically close questions that are left open and have received answers approved by the community.

If I find an old, unclosed question, I sometimes add an agree to the answer I think is closest.
It is not always enough to trigger closing thequestion, but if everyone did that, some could be closed.
It is true, sometimes I think none of the answers are particualrly good, or I simply do not know enough about the subject area to choose one rather than the other.

Cristina, thank you for using the correct terms "agreements" and "disagreements". There is no such thing in English as an "agree" or a "disagree".
Off-topic, I know, but I don't get many chances to raise this ugly issue.

and then forgot about it.
As I have just some spare time and found this discussion, I tried to "search the latest questions" and chose "open" - but I cannot go back further than 1 month.
There are surely many many open questions that are much more than a month old... How can we go back more than a month and see only the open ones without scrolling down ALL the questions?

Good article, thank you for sharing! I, too, have spent some time scrolling through the terminology questions, slowly working my way up from December last year to present, and it is indeed very interesting to read through them, not only the open questions but the closed ones also. In the case of abandoned questions I saw quite a few user accounts already terminated... Nevertheless, we do learn from questions, answers, peer comments and discussions alike. Thank you ProZ.
