Hi!
Does anyone here have any experience about travelling in the Adirondack and Vermont regions? My wife and me have two weeks to spend in September/October and we would like to hike these places.
But on the net I can find only rather expensive stays, with room-rates about 150-200 USD.

I believe that there could be the same kind of accommodation like e.g. in German or Austrian villages in the Alps, private people renting out rooms for a week or less, B&B. But it seems impossible to find simple stays. We don't need jacuzzi or sauna, just a bed and a bathroom, 'cause we're spending our time hiking.

Do you think it is possible to find accommodation on the spot, without reservation? Its foliage season all right.

Perhaps someone can give me a hint?

Regards
Heinrich

I'd try... Jul 25, 2009

I'd try Googling "Vermont Bed and Breakfast". There seems to be a lot there.
I was born and grew up in Vermont, so I hope you have a great visit and enjoy what Vermonters call "leaf peeping".

Sorry Jul 25, 2009

I have no specific information about the Vermont region. However, I would try to look for inexpensive chains (Motel 6 etc.) instead of Bed & Breakfasts as the those are often quite expensive (I spent a summer working at one in Connecticut, and it definitely wasn't the cheapest option around).

I would think that September/October is the most expensive time to visit Vermont. It is beautiful, but unfortunately that means that plenty of tourists will go there to enjoy the fall colors.

Or you may try:

Just type key words in the [search for:] field, you will find lots of info.

I also recommend

Sometimes, you can find some useful coupons for saving on your travel budget.

Good luck!

Stowe and more... Jul 26, 2009

Hi Heinrich.

I live on the Pacific coast now, but I grew up in Montreal across the border from New York and Vermont and my family spent quite a few vacations there.

Hi Heinrich.

You have picked the best time to go - September and October. They call it "leaf season" because of the fabulous yellow, orange and red colours of the trees. Make your reservations early.

For Vermont, I know Stowe the best. Stowe is an all season village with lots of accommodations of all sorts, including the Trapp Family Lodge, run by the Trapp family of "Sound of Music" fame. http://www.trappfamily.com/

The Adirondacks are on the other side of Lake Champlain, which divides New York from Vermont. We used to stay in this little village called Schroon Lake, about 140 miles south of Montreal.

A larger, more commercial tourist town is Lake George. While I understand that you are going to hike, Lake George might be a good place to set up base camp since there are lots of accommodations there as well as some interesting attractions, such as Fort William Henry, which played a role in the Revolutionary War.

Enjoy your trip and tell us about your experience when you return!

TOPIC STARTER
No problem Oct 7, 2009

We were in Vermont and in the White Mountains at the end of September and always found accommodation at fair prices on the fly. Sorry to say though that hiking in those areas is not very attractive because all the time one walks in thick woods, no chance to see the landscape. Also the woods are dull compared to those in Northern Europe. Here we have berries all over the place, and mushrooms too!
But travelling in New England was a pleasure.
