Good morning,

Word (2000) started to crash yesterday every time I tried to open a new unit in SDL Trados suite 2007.
I exported my TM to WordFast classic, but the same problem appears.
I uninstalled Trados, uninstalled and reinstalled Office, but Word keeps on crashing, this time when I close it.

Good morning,

Word (2000) started to crash yesterday every time I tried to open a new unit in SDL Trados suite 2007.

I restored my computer to a previous version, but to no effect. At the moment I'm considering formatting it and reinstalling my Vista altogether.

Does anyone have any idea of what could cause these crashes in Word? I checked the Windows Updates, but none seems to be for Word, and anayway, I restored a previous version.

Thank you a LOT in advance!

Try deleting your normal.dot Jul 24, 2009

But make a backup copy of it, if you have any important settings or macros. Word will create a new one, and hopefully it will work.

Will try this Jul 24, 2009

Thank you Adam,

I was anxiously refreshing this page from time to time

Yours is a solution I haven't tried yet, so I'll see if it helps.

*** It did not work... Word recreated a Normal.dot, but crashed when I closed it. Do you think of any other possibility?

could be a lot of things Jul 24, 2009

Seems like you already did the most sensible things.
Are you still facing the problem?

Maybe something was updated automatically on your machine (Antivirus, firewall?)
Try and turn off as many things on you computer and see if you still have the same problem...

If you have another computer, copy the TM to this one and see if the problem still occurs, if so, it's not computer related, but somewhere in your files (corruption?).

Installing more updates will probably not help unless you identify a specific propblem which is mentioned in the release notes of the update...

Good luck

I'll check the antivirus Jul 24, 2009

Hi Ed,

Yes, I'm still facing the problem. I'm working on a laptop, with the same TM and the same file than those I was using when the problem occurred. Everything is fine on the laptop, that's why I tried to repair my Desktop computer.

I'll check the AV, those things can mess things without your knowing.

But I'm running out of solutions now, and I fear this also happens on my laptop before I have found out how to solve this problem.

Thank you... See more

*** This is really strange. I can use Word as usual (except for Trados and WordFast), but it invariably crashes when I close it.

Do you have any other Word templates attached? Jul 24, 2009

For example from Adobe Acrobat, OCR software etc? If you do, try disabling or deleting them. Since your Word crashes with Trados AND with Wordfast, it looks like a problem with Word itself. You might also check the Task Manager for instances of Word running in the bacground and shut them down.

Other templates Jul 24, 2009

I'll check that, and the task manager.

Also, for the moment neither Trados nor Wordfast are running on my computer. Word crashes on its own.

It is such a pain!

Thank you for your help

*** Nope... I'm on the registry track at the moment. It seems I should rename a Word key, but I haven't found out which one yet.

Seems to work Jul 24, 2009

I managed to open a translation unit with Trados. I don't know if it is for good, I'll have to work some time on my computer to check if it's all over.

For those who encounter the same problem, I followed the instructions of this article: http://wordprocessing.about.com/od/troubleshootin1/qt/wordregentry.htm

I'm copying the interesting bit:

"If the problem persists, it is likely the result of a bad registry key. This is easy to fix. However, you must be careful when editing the registry. The registry tells Windows how to run programs. If you make a mistake, it can render the computer useless.

Before making changes to the registry, back it up. After you’ve backed up the registry, rename the Word data key:

1. From the Windows Start menu, select Run

2. Type regedit in the box and click OK

3. On the left side of the window, click the folders in the following order (the location will vary depending on your version of Word):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

4. Right-click the Data folder and select Edit

5. Rename the folder

6. Close the registry

When you restart Word, the problem should be resolved. A new data folder will be created automatically."

Have a great weekend! Mine is going to be better now that my mind is free to stop thinking about PC problems...
