I would guess the material is formica.

It could be painted wood, I suppose, but I really do think (based on the contect) that it is formica.

  -> I don't know. Isn't formica a "finish." Anyway David certainly knows what white is in Swedish (he's a very experienced translator) - his question was "What type of material is vita?"
