It is the old word for what is now called the bobbin inside the shuttle and is middle English. It was the first instrument invented in stone age times for making threads for weaving. If you read the explanation in the American Heritage http://www.bartleby.com/61/13/S0641300.html and compare with the description in Överkalix school below you will see that they are quite identical.
