street pastor Explanation: One option is "street pastors" - see here the local Nottingham group. This a Christian-inspired group that helps out by patrolling the streets in the evening. Neighbourhood watch is somewhat different and is geared more towards protecting property in local areas. The street pastors often patrol city areas. (Nighttime) Neighbourhood watch/Adults Explanation: Having participated in this type of program, I can assure you it has nothing to do with pastors. church, or religion. Parents are politely asked by the schools (assigned according to the class your kid is attending) to walk around the community just to show kids they're not alone, and the trouble-makers adapt their activities to when the old folks go home... The locals claimed it reduced vanalism at our youngest's school...But it did provide a good opportunity to chat with folks... 'Volunteers' sounds good, and you're not paid... there is no formal pressure, but peer pressure is what makes this thing work. Here's how one document dealt with your term (p.36 + ) http://polisen.azurewebsites.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/... |

night patrols Explanation: Following on from my reference entry, I am adding this as a possible option in the light of the extra information you provided in the discussion box. However, it would probably be a good idea if you could somehow also include a reference to "volunteers" or "parents" to get across the relatively informal nature of these groups (see Deane's various comments). The foundation nattvandring.nu The foundation initiates networking agreements with groups and associations wishing to promote local night patrols throughout Sweden. In a very short period, the idea of parents on night patrols developed into a strong nationwide movement What are night patrols? Night patrols show that you care. Young people who stay out on weekend evenings and at night often need to have adults around. We are wherever these young people may be, visible and available on the streets and in town squares. We create confidence and security by being there for young people in need of help. We may be required to listen, mediate, offer first aid or simply lend a mobile phone. What does a night patroller do? Night patrollers go out into the streets and town squares where they mingle with young people, offering security. http://www.nattvandring.nu/Documents/nattvandring.nu/Flaggor... In the following link, the terms volunteer night patrol groups and Swedish neighbourhood watch are both used. The Night Patrol, "Nattvandring”, is one of the biggest community safety movements in Sweden. Night patrol groups consist of parents and civilians who have an interest in the protection and care for younger members of the local community. More than 2000 communities in Sweden have since adopted Trygve, including local police, community groups, private users and the Swedish Neighbourhood Watch, Nattvandring.nu (consisting of 40,000 active volunteers). http://trygve.co.uk/connected-communities |
