I had got as far as 'dowelling' myself yet it didn't feel right, but having since looked around a number of UK sites (and with Agneta's blessing), I will stick with that. Hence only 2 points, Deane!

agree  Agneta Pallinder: I think I would just say dowel, or dowelling, for "rundstav" thick enough to be used as a handrail.
