Swedish term or phrase: slumpa ut
Hello

The company "Stora Enso" is in financial trouble and so:

Ett drastiskt krisbeslut blev att slumpa ut allt som fanns i Nordamerika, Consolidated och Fawkesbury, till ett nybildat konsortium, Newspage, där Stora Enso var med som delägare.

I'm not sure how to translate "slumpa ut". "Transfer", "sell-off" etc. come to mind but Stora Enso is a joint-owner of Newpage so that's a bit like selling something to yourself.

I also wonder if "slumpa" has the idea of "chance" or if this verb is unrelated to "en slump"

So is it to try to get rid of something "willy nilly" as well?

What verb in English could cover all this?

Thanks

fire sale
Explanation:
Right, fire sale involves selling (off) stuff cheaply, so both you and Agneta have the right idea -- but it is specifically used in finance situations like your context.

"Their dramatic solution was to hold a fire sale on all their North American assets ... creating a new consortium where Stora Enso remained as part owner."

So they're not 'selling to themselves,' rather they are selling part of what they own to bring in partners, while keeping a portion.

sell at a loss

Explanation:
I think this sounds more natural than sell cheaply, but it has the same meaning.

'spin off' or divest

Explanation:
Spin off, a type of divestiture, while it doesn't give a sense of selling off cheaply in this case, is a term used to describe the way a company might divest a subsidiary if it is not doing well, didn't fit with current activities or might be in need of some cash to boost. Some perform really well after being spun off. Just a suggestion. Microsoft famously spun off its 'shaky' internet business Expedia: e.g.

Example sentence(s):
  • "Microsoft has been late to the Internet boom," said an analyst with Joseph Stevens and Co. "Until now, they have chosen not to spin off their Net properties, while other companies like Yahoo, eBay and Amazon.com have gone on to enjoy amazing market caps"
