Both "tick" and "check" tends to denote a "checkmark", i.e.
an angular figure with two unequal strokes ending in an acute angle.
A cross is something different.
The issue is confounded by that, to a Swede, the "checkmark" is
typically used to indicate an error - our school teachers made
liberal use of that. To the native Anglophone, sometimes the
reverse is true, and the diagonal cross indicates an error of some
kind.
Assuming that the recipient of the filled out form is OK with it, "check the box" will work for the person filling it out. But you will typically get
checkmarks, not crosses.
