I think distillery would give too high tech an impression. "Vitriolverk" is sometimes used as an alternative to "vitriosjuderi" or "vitriolkokeri", so how about simply "the vitriol works". After all you only have an almost throw-away sentence about where Urban Hjärne worked.

I've skimmed the document and seen that sjuderi = kokeri but that has no hits either. But from the description, I'd now say it's a distillery

The vitriol in Falun was blue vitriol or copper sulphate, present in the water sloshing about in the copper mine. The "vitriolsjuderi" or "vitriolkokeri" was a means of evaporating the water, partly by first leading it across heaps of brushwood, then by heating it, so as to retrieve the copper sulphate and from it the copper.
