stage Explanation: In this context I would use the word you used in your question: stage - given the explanation below it seems to be the most appropriate word, as it has nothing to do with the actual model of the plane. I googled and it seems to be used, at in this manner, fairly specifically with JAS. I considered "series" as an alternative, but that seems to imply that the planes in each series differ from each other, which isn't the case (or it's at least not as simple as that) here.
