Un dock flottant, ou dry dock, comporte un ponton horizontal et des caissons qui servent de ballasts. Quand les ballasts sont pleins, le ponton est immergé permettant ainsi l'entrée du bateau. Ces mêmes ballasts sont ensuite vidés. Le ponton remonte, et le bateau est au sec. Les opérations d'entretien peuvent commencer comme sur n'importe quelle cale de carénage
