Spanish term or phrase: por méritos propios
Durante mucho tiempo, las virtudes curativas de sus aguas sulfuradas atrajeron a visitantes llegados de distintos puntos de España, Portugal e incluso Francia. El lugar, aunque más bien modesto, figuró **por méritos propios** entre los más célebres balnearios gallegos.

It's not a difficult expression but I can only think about rather literal translations.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

English translation:in its own right
Explanation:
This is the closest equivalent I can think of in English. Living in the Uk for so long I don't often here people saying "on its own merit" but mostly "in its own right"

in one's own right=

phrase of rights a result of one's own claims, qualifications, or efforts, rather than an association with someone else.
"he was already established as a poet in his own right"

Explanation:
This is literal translation and I can suggest some more options but in this case I would suggest this one.

Explanation:
La expresión literal existe en inglés. Si quieres algo menos formal, puedes decir "thank to their own effort"

Explanation:
Depending on the context, "by its own merits" could be better than "on its own merits".

Explanation:
I would agree with "in its own right" being the best or the more literal translations, but seems like you're looking for something a little different in this case.

My suggestions will require a little rewording, but I'm sure you get the ideas.
