What is important here to understand, when translating a text from Latin American Spanish, is that when they refer to "portal" they are most probably meaning a normal "website", and so should be translated as such. The translator should know by the context and also by the target audience of the source text whether they are talking about a normal website or, for example if it is more of a technical document, may be referring to a portal as such. But in general, the term portal in English is not used all that much in common understanding, except perhaps on Doctor Who in reference to time travel!

The portal can be the point of entry to one (or several) websites or pages. For example, here: https://sede.minetur.gob.es/en-us/Paginas/index.aspx

Thanks all for your feedback. While the term "portal" may have its technical difference in English, in Latin American Spanish it is commonly used interchangeably with "sitio web" and they mean the same thing. I think it is important for translators to know this, because "portal" (as pointed out here) technically means something else in English, and so in most cases would actually be the incorrect or suboptimal translation for "portal", where it should simply be rendered as "website".

I agree with @neilmac. That said, in English, you’re safer to go with the more common “website” since “portal” is much less common. The only time to go with “portal” is if the audience is more technical and the site actually IS a portal.

Trust me, I'm a translator. The link is simply the first that came up in a hurried online search. However, my main direct client is an EDI service provider and I can assure you that there is a difference between a portal and a website, whatever those 'wacky latinos' might do, say or think :-)
