Spanish term or phrase: Registradora principal (I)
I'm translating a certified copy of a birth certificate from the State of Zulia, Venezuela. The official's title is "registradora principal (I)." Her seal specifies "registro principal - Escribientes 1." I'm assuming that the (I) is a roman numeral, and that it refers to the same concept as the 1--but perhaps not? Is it a reference to her seniority or rank among registrars? Is she working in the main/central/most important registry office in Zulia?

Not asking for a translation--looking for insight about the (I) and 1.

Asker: Thanks for your response, bigedsenior! I didn't like Main Registrar, either, and it seems that both "Principal Registry" [the office] and "Principal Registrar" [the person] are widely used, even if they are excessively literal. Since there are several types of registry in Venezuela, and since the US system has such significant differences from the Venezuelan system, it may be best to remain literal in translation. Thank you for the clarification about the (I).
