Science - Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) / microalgal culture
Spanish term or phrase: UMA 5
Las microalgas fueron cultivadas en matraces Erlenmeyer de 2 litros hasta obtener suficiente cantidad de biomasa para los ensayos, con medio f/2 modificado o UMA 5 (NaNO3 4.55*10-5 M; NaH2PO4*H2O 2.41*10-4 M; NaHCO3 1.99*10-3 M) a 20 °C y fotoperiodo continuo de 70 µmol m-2s-1(24 h luz).

It also occurs in this context:
El ensayo se realizó por triplicado con inoculación de la cepa microalgal a una concentración de 2x105 cél*mL-1 en matraces con 250 mL de medio UMA 5 preparado con agua de mar artificial

It must be some sort of medium, but a google search returns nothing, neither in English nor in Spanish. Any ideas?? Thanks ever so much.

Most of the France-based translators I know use Macs... Perhaps Google works differently on them, I know that my friends spellchecker on her Macintosh doesn't always work as thoroughly as it does on my PC...

If it DOES refer to the medium, perhaps its a product related with the UMA 5 device? Or is it misused in the source text?

Notes to answerer
Asker: Yes, indeed. I thought it was a medium (see second sentence) and hence searched for "UMA 5 medium", which returns nothing. Shows you how less can certainly be more! I guess they got a bit mixed up themselves?! Thanks!!

agree  Marie Wilson: It's not something I'm familiar with but it seems likely. Oops I think I agreed too soon, but it did seem plausible to me.

-> For things like this I usually ask the author, although some agencies are reluctant to do so for fear of appearing unprofessional, or whatever.

neutral  philgoddard: This is about weights and measures calibration. It makes no sense in the context, and the only reason I'm not disagreeing is because it's you :-).

-> Well, "provide comparison of 1 g – 1000 g weights" sounds like weights and measures to me...
