Spanish term or phrase: talleres libres
I have run into this term a fair amount in art history texts. It seems to describe non-academic study of art from the mid-19th to mid-20th century. Is there a term like this in ENglish. The specific context is the brief bio of an Argentine artist:
Ludmila Feodorovna
(Moscow, 1896–Buenos Aires, 1973)
Pintora. Llegó a la Argentina en 1928 junto con su esposo, el escultor José Fioravanti. Feodorovna se había formado en los talleres libres en París, donde participó de diversos salones.

English translation:open studios
Explanation:
This refers to art schools where anyone can sign up for classes. They're the equivalent of the Art Students League of New York. (I know this because aside from being a translator, I'm an artist. And because I lived in NYC and Mexico for a long time.) Cheers!

I see your point, Wendy. (And do look me up.) And I also like David's suggestion, except that "atelier" gives the text a French flavor. Maybe "open art schools."

Notes to answerer
Asker: I think of open studios as being when an artist opens his/her studio to the public for the day (most of the hits on google point to that too). BTW, I am an artist and a translator too! I will look for your profile and make contact. Best

vacant or free workshops

Explanation:
The information given states that something had been formed in vacant workshops in Paris where she participated in various salons.

The artist herself is not 'something that had been formed'. Perhaps a group of artists was formed in Paris around that time, if not before or after. The group could have later progressed to make a magazine for publication.

disagree  Carol Gullidge: I doubt very much whether Ludmila Feodorovna, the artist in question, would take very kindly to being referred to as "something" that "had been formed"!//just shows that word-for-word translations simply don't work, especially at PRO level :((
