Explanation:
I've never seen it used this way, but the patient is able to engage in only the basic means of communication? I've only seen bazalni for basal as in the foundation layers of skin, geography, etc.

Asker: The context certainly suggests this, but bazálny in the sense of ‘basic' rather than 'basal' (as in 'basal ganglia' etc. etc.) is new to me.
