Kondičná príprava dostáva značný priestor na začiatku prípravného obdobia. Športovci sa stretávajú s problémami tzv. svalovej horúčky, ktorá sa v odbornej literatúre opisuje ako „oneskorená svalová citlivosť“ (delayed onset muscle soreness – DOMS). Vzniká približne 13 hodín po zaťažení, trvá dva, tri a viac dní. Podľa Nosaku (2002) môže stav oneskorenej svalovej citlivosti (OSC) u netrénovaných jedincov zotrvať až 10 a viac dní. Je dôsledkom nezvyklého zaťaženia, najmä prostredníctvom excentrických kontrakcií. Tento stav vzniká častejšie vo flexoroch, ktoré nie sú antigravitačné a teda v bežnom živote sú zaťažované menej ako extenzory.

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), also sometimes called muscle fever, is the pain or discomfort often felt 24 to 72 hours after exercising and subsides generally within 2 to 3 days. It is frequently said to be caused by lactic acid buildup;[citation needed] however, since lactic acid disperses fairly rapidly, it could not explain pain experienced days after exercise, and some concentric-only exercises produce lactic acid, but rarely produce DOMS.[1]
