Большинство санитарных приборов устроено таким образом, что между чистой водой (краном) и канализационной водой есть естественный разрыв, так что при обычных условиях канализационная вода не может попасть в чистую.
Но есть устройства, в которых такой разрыв не получается сам. Вот, например, стиральная машина. Её можно подключить непосредственно к системе канализации, что иногда и делают - и к чистой воде она тоже подключена. При неблагоприятном, но возможном стечении обстоятельств сточная вода из канализации может попасть в чистую воду и распространиться по водопроводу.
Подключение машинки непосредственно к канализации должно производиться только по инструкции, в которой обычно оговариваются все требования, обеспечивающие разрыв струи.
Даже простой водопроводный шланг, брошенный в лужу, может привести к эпидемии городского масштаба – если воду отключат, её засосёт в систему, а потом, когда воду дадут, она распространится по водопроводной сети.
Для всех устройств должен быть обеспечен разрыв струи, небольшое соединённое с атмосферой открытое пространство, - тогда при переполнении, например, канализационной системы сточные воды будут вытекать через устройство разрыва струи, а не попадут в приборы.
