The Playing Court
1. Dimensions: 25-42 m long x 15-25 m wide
2. Marking: 8 cm wide touchlines at the sides, goal lines at the ends, and a halfway-line across; 3 m center circle; no walls or dasherboards
3. Penalty Area: Arc measuring 6 m from each post
4. Penalty Mark: 6 m from the mid-point of goal line
5. Second Penalty Mark: 12 m from the mid-point of the goal line
6. Substitution Zones: 6 m zone (3 m on each side of halfway-line) on the bench side of the pitch
7. The Goals: 2 m high x 3 m wide

Меня заинтересовало, почему так называется и в английском. Раньше я почему-то считал, что наши выражения вроде "соревнования по футзалу" -- от неграмотности (как бы "по футбольному залу"). Оказалось, что сокращение взято из испанского или португальского:

The term "futsal" comes from "futbol de salon" or "indoor soccer." Futsal is a five-a-side version of soccer played indoors on a basketball-sized court (no walls). Futsal has experienced tremendous growth and is the only indoor version of soccer with a sanctioned world championship. The sport is played internationally, with recognized continental and club championships. Futsal is the only "official form of Indoor Soccer" as approved by (FIFA) Federation Internationale de Football Association. It is played in all the continents of the world by over 100 countries and has 12 million players.

Futsal is a sport that is a derivative of soccer and played with five-man teams on a basketball style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball, unlike the traditional sport of U.S. indoor soccer played with six-man squads and walls. FUTSAL FACT FILE

* The term futsal comes from Spanish - 'futbol sala' - and Portuguese - 'futebol de salao' - which both mean indoor football.

* It started in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1930 when Carlos Ceriani devised a five-a-side football game for YMCA competitions.

* The futsal ball is smaller with a lower bounce to encourage more skilful play, with no walls on the pitch and kick-ins restarting the match when the ball goes out.

* The pitch is basketball court-sized and the goals are similar to hockey nets, while four officials run the game, two referees, a time-keeper and one to manage the two benches.

* The first competition took place in 1965 when Paraguay won the first South American Cup.

* The first Futsal World Championships took place in 1982 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with the hosts winning again. They also won the tournament in 1989, 1992 and 1996, before Spain won in Guatemala in 2000.

* Russia won the UEFA Futsal Championship in 1999, with Italy the current champions.

On the other you can enquire at any of the places we will list and they'll no doubt have details of local teams that you can join - allowing you to play in a league.

Anyway, on with the venues. Britannia Leisure Centre (40 Hyde Road, N1. (020) 7729 4485) has a selection of outdoor pitches. Colder than indoor ones admittedly - but excellent for the constitution.
