Below given passage is about ice climbing:
Снег тихо подал, камни становились скользкими, я шел в большом напряжении, зная, что ошибки недопустимы. Мороз усиливался, в меховых рукавицах было тепло, но без них руки моментально замерзали. Приходилось постоянно рубить ступени: одной рукой я вгонял скобу для крепления бревен в лед, затем, держась за нее и сохраняя равновесие, работал ледорубом. От напряжения до колик затекали мышцы ног — трудно давалась устойчивость. Резкие уколы льдинок, брызгающих из-под ледоруба в лицо, дополняли неприятные ощущения.
Удар ледорубом, еще удар… Ступень готова.

The problematic part for me is "скоба для крепления бревен в лед".

I couldn't find any information regarding the use of logs ("бревна") for ice climbing and I am not sure if I understood it correctly. In this connection, the term "скоба" is also not clear.

Would be grateful for your assistance.

this is no special скоба, this guy is using regular log staples for climbing
