It would be interesting to compare this to Daglish's own later attempt, which they say was very different (and markedly British English) from his revision of Harry's.
It is very hard to render properly and ideally. Even if it is a hard job, translator should try to keep the original. Some translators lived in that country spending time with those people in that area to understand their culture and traditions. If Harry C. Stephen lived and knew much about the Russian culture, I think he would not use "dog" as in the source. In translation, if dog is used in one culture, it must not be used in another culture. For ex. in another culture it is a cow. Or completely different thing, not an animal. If one uses directly "you and she", it is also considered as 'direct'. It should be traditional and popular in that culture. I totally agree with Boris about his reading (criticism).
Not to diminish Oleg's professional prowess, but the English translation he quotes is, naturally, not his own, but rather Harry C. Stephens' (AKA Stephen Garry), and I've read quite harsh criticism of this translation (and not only for the fact that it omits around one quarter of the original altogether).

I think you are wrong: your translation is excellent both in terms of context, content and style. And no, it cannot be translated как угодно: it's not some bureaucratese with its heretofors, hencefoths, wherebys and hereafters; it's a text of fiction where one's duty is to maintain not only at least the basic meaning of the expression but most importantly the mood, the emotional and idiomatic impact "thereof" :))) You did it very well, so I don'd understand what's the problrm...

Главное, с моей точки зрения, чтобы представленный переводчиком текст понравился заказчику перевода на другой язык и чтобы этот заказчик оплатил представленный ему перевод на другой язык согласно достигнутой ранее договоренности между заказчиком перевода и переводчиком.
