Of course, you could say 'even in those distant times', but the word 'уже' makes me want to say 'even' and 'early'.

agree  David Knowles: Don't like "back" or "back then" - the register is wrong. I'm not sure that далекое needs a specific translation, so I'd be tempted to put "even at that time", relying on "even" and "that" to convey the meaning.
