Дело в том, что ББК расположен в северо-восточной части тогда Советской республики Карелии, омываемой с севера и востока огромным Онежским озером, на северном берегу которого и начинается Канал (ББК), соединяющий цепочку озёр и образующий шлюзовые лестницы с обоих сторон ***водораздела***, и выходящий в Белое море.

Это был как раз тот самый ***водораздел*** - самый верхний участок канала, от которого с обоих концов вниз шли системы шлюзов.

I'm having trouble figuring out the right terminology for this. In the dictionary водораздел is defined as a watershed or drainage/water divide, which seems to be hydrological feature. In this text, however, водораздел seems to be the highest point in the canal, or the summit pound/level (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canal_pound). But I don't know enough about canal construction. Any ideas?
