Russian term or phrase: электронная подпись
I am translating an annex to an information services contract that involves secure messaging. One of the terms is электронная подпись.
While my first reaction was to use "electronic signature", I had some doubts when the term appeared in the same document, clearly referring to the same thing, as "усиленная неквалифицированная электронная подпись." After a little web scouring I learned there is a difference between "electronic signature" and "digital signature" in English: while all digital signatures are electronic signatures, the latter term is broader and includes other electronic forms of identification. After Wiki-ing both terms (English and Russian) and understanding the context (encryption, key generation, etc.) I decided what I have here indeed qualifies as a "digital signature" in English.

But in Russian, it appears the term " Электронная подпись (ЭП)" is synonymous, or at least used interchangeably (correctly or not) with "Электронная цифровая подпись (ЭЦП)" (from Wikipedia) "...реквизит электронного документа, полученный в результате криптографического преобразования информации с использованием закрытого ключа подписи и позволяющий проверить отсутствие искажения информации в электронном документе с момента формирования подписи (целостность), принадлежность подписи владельцу сертификата ключа подписи (авторство), а в случае успешной проверки подтвердить факт подписания электронного документа (неотказуемость).

The laws and GOSTs I was able to find on the topic of ЭП also seem to deal primarily with what would be called in English "digital signatures" rather than "electronic signatures", and usually include some reference to "цифровая."

Any thoughts? Is there any good reason I should use "electronic" rather than "digital"?

I don't mind Oleg's answer, however I'd rather opt for the digital one.

Notes to answerer
Asker: It turned out that later in the document the term "простая электронная подпись" appeared. I ended up using "electronic signature" there and "digital signature" everywhere else.

neutral  Oleg Lozinskiy: How would you then translate 'электронная цифровая подпись (ЭЦП)'? All 'digital signatures' are 'electronic' but 'electronic signatures' can be 'non-digital'.

The term Electronic Signature, or E-Signature, is a high-level concept meaning any electronic indication of intent to agree to a record. This can include such common practices as clicking a “checkout” button or exchanging emails indicating agreement. The beauty of RightSignature is that it replicates the comfort and familiarity of the pen-and-paper signing experience in a browser-based electronic signature application. RightSignature’s e-signature solution provides ironclad security, robust legal defensibility, faster time-to-signature, and an elegant user experience, all while producing executed documents complete with handwritten signatures.

What’s the difference between a digital signature and an electronic signature?

The broad category of electronic signatures (eSignatures) encompasses many types of electronic signatures. The category includes digital signatures, which are a specific technology implementation of electronic signatures. Both digital signatures and other eSignature solutions allow you to sign documents and authenticate the signer. However, there are differences in purpose, technical implementation, geographical use, and legal and cultural acceptance of digital signatures versus other types of eSignatures.

In particular, the use of digital signature technology for eSignatures varies significantly between countries that follow open, technology-neutral eSignature laws, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, and those that follow tiered eSignature models that prefer locally defined standards that are based on digital signature technology, including many countries in the European Union, South America, and Asia. In addition, some industries also support specific standards that are based on digital signature technology.

E Signature Vs Digital Signature

...E Signature vs digital signature - Are you wondering what is the difference? Let’s compare.

E signature or electronic signature is a broad category, which includes using a simple image of your signature. Used both for business and personal use, e signatures can be used on any document. It is defined as "electronic sound, symbol or process, attached to or logically associated with a contract or other record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record.”

Legally binding in the United States, there are two Acts that establish the legality of electronic signatures – the U.S. Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN, 2000), and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA, 1999).

Digital signature uses an encryption technology and is a secure form of signing a document using a specific technology (X.509 PKI standard). You can cryptographically attach your identity to a document. It cannot be forged, is tamper proof, can stand independent verification, and adheres to strict standards and processes.

-> Thank you, Ilan! I'd rather prefer e-signature, as this option would allow to translate 'электронная цифровая подпись (ЭЦП)' as 'digital e-signature'.
