That idiom is usually used to differentiate between online stores and "real" stores, but I think it might be useful here.

By the way, after quickly looking through the article, I highly doubt that it was this guy who wrote the answers. But then again, wrong word usage is a habit of Russian copywriters as well.

ILAN, that's why I was talking about the context. But judging by the article, it's exactly as I supposed. "Им кажется, что у них и так все не плохо: производства ориентированы на выпуск крупнотоннажной продукции, потребители есть, многое идет на экспорт."

So what he basically means is that they're well off because they have large-scale production. The fact that he used a wrong word for that is completely in line with the word usage habits of Russian politicians.

This one isn't wrong, but isn't very standard usage, either. The most frequent use of "крупнотоннажный" is in chemical industry, referring to simple chemicals mostly used as feedstock for further industrial processes, as opposed to the so-called fine chemicals. It's also frequently applied in a similar manner to bulk commodities in general, and is also often used in transportation, referring to something bigger than your usual HGV (oversize transporters, quarry dumpers, etc.) or to large ships, especially tankers.

Nobody wrote anything. Just a speech by the Dear Leader of one of Russia's "republics" where he says that they have factories making this stuff. Not sure he knows how to write, come to think of it.

without some rephrasing, mentioning the specific nature of the products they mean. I.e., massive construction assemblies, heavy machinery, big guns, etc. It just makes no sense to say manufacturing "large products" or "massive products" in English. That is, of course, if the quality of writing matters here. If it doesn't, just give them their "massive products" and be done with it. Pft, who cares what a politician says anyway?

I don't like the replies so far :-)
"designed for large scale production" - no, large scale production means the factory is big or produces lots of widgets. But the Russian text is about producing big (heavy) widgets, not lots of them

"heavyweight products" - sounds like products for heavyweight boxers or people with a weight problem...

So far I have 'bulky goods' (my own choice, and as it's just a speech by some local politician that's what I'm going with in my job), but it sounds a bit clumsy too
